Overview
Founded on November 9, 1883, St. Paul Lutheran Church at Cave Creek is recognized as the oldest rural Lutheran church in Gillespie County. The congregation was organized when families living in the Cave Creek community found the long wagon journey to Fredericksburg difficult and desired a church closer to home for worship and confirmation instruction for their children.
Conrad Herbort donated land for the church, parsonage, and cemetery, and construction of the first church building soon followed. The cornerstone was laid in February 1884, and the church was dedicated on June 22, 1884, with large crowds gathering from surrounding communities to celebrate the occasion.
By 1889, St. Paul Lutheran had become a self-supporting congregation with more than 300 baptized members. Over the years, the church continued to grow through improvements and additions, including the enlargement in 1891, the addition of the chancel in 1928, and the installation of new pews and a statue of Christ in 1938. In 1967, beautiful art-glass windows were added, and a historical marker was dedicated to St. Paul Lutheran as the oldest rural church in Gillespie County.
Today, St. Paul Lutheran Church at Cave Creek remains an active and treasured historic landmark, continuing a legacy of faith, worship, and community fellowship that has endured for well over a century.
Full History of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Cave Creek
On November 9, 1883, a group of Lutheran families living in the North Grape Creek community, later known as the Cave Creek community, gathered at Conrad Herbort's home to discuss organizing a Lutheran congregation closer to their homes. Most were members of Zion Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, but traveling 10 to 20 miles by wagon or buggy made regular attendance difficult. The need for a church within the community became increasingly important, especially for the religious instruction and confirmation of their children.
The meeting opened with prayer and the singing of a German hymn. The families resolved to organize a new congregation, which they named Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul Church. Plans were immediately made to construct a church building measuring 30 feet long, 25 feet wide, and 14 feet high, complete with a 40-foot tower. Conrad Herbort generously donated several acres of land for the church, parsonage, and cemetery.
A church council and building committee were elected, and pledges totaling more than $400 were collected from the founding members and friends of the congregation. Lumber for the church was hauled approximately 75 miles from Austin by mule team, a tremendous undertaking for the time.
Construction of the church began in February 1884. The cornerstone was laid on February 22, 1884, during a special ceremony led by Pastor Fiedler of Fredericksburg, who also dedicated the cemetery.
The congregation soon called Rev. Michael Haag to serve as its first pastor. Pastor Haag and his family arrived in June 1884 and temporarily lived with the Herbort family until a parsonage could be provided.
On June 22, 1884, the newly completed church was dedicated before a large crowd that filled both the sanctuary and the surrounding grounds. Visitors traveled many miles to attend the celebration. The dedication services included hymns sung by the choir from Zion Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, sermons in both the morning and afternoon, and a community meal shared by all who attended.
As the congregation grew, improvements and additions were made throughout the years. In 1891, the church building was enlarged. By 1889, the congregation had become self-supporting with more than 300 baptized members. Additional improvements included the construction of the chancel in 1928, the installation of new pews, and the installation of a statue of Christ in 1938.
In preparation for the congregationโs 100th Anniversary in 1983, major remodeling projects were completed during 1981 and 1982. In 1991, the exterior of the church was beautifully illuminated with tiny, clear Christmas lights, creating a beloved holiday tradition enjoyed by both the congregation and visitors to the community.
A Long-Range Planning Committee, formed in 1993, helped guide the congregation's future and led to several projects, including the creation of a pictorial church directory. Throughout its history, St. Paul Lutheran Church at Cave Creek has remained deeply rooted in faith, family, and community, continuing to serve as both a place of worship and an enduring symbol of Gillespie County's heritage.
