The Friends of Gillespie County Country Schools

🎭 Painted School Stage Curtains Album

The Painted School Stage Curtains Album highlights a unique and often overlooked piece of Gillespie County’s school history. These hand-painted curtains, once displayed in rural schoolhouses, featured advertisements from local businesses—serving as an early form of community-supported promotion long before modern printed advertising.

Today, they offer a vivid glimpse into the partnerships, craftsmanship, and everyday life of the communities these schools served.

Painted School Stage Curtains Album

This Album of Painted School Stage Curtains documents 13 painted stage curtains dating from the 1930s to the 1950s that have not previously been inventoried or studied. Friends of Gillespie County Country Schools began the 2013  project with a professional assessment and conservation assistance provided by 60 volunteers at the Willow City School.

They studied the known remaining painted school stage curtains in our county. Their purpose was to conserve and protect these fragile curtains and to answer basic questions, such as their age, who made them, how much they cost, who paid for them, and how these little country schools had such extraordinary stage curtains.
