Overview

Built in 1916 and consolidated in 1955, Pecan Creek School preserves the look and feel of a rural one-room classroom. Wooden desks, classroom maps, bookcases, a world globe, science cases, and the teacher’s desk reflect everyday school life. One important feature was the recitation bench near the teacher’s desk, where students from a particular grade sat for lessons or recitations.

Full History of Pecan Creek School

The first school in the Pecan Creek area began in 1899 in the Bernhard Friedrich house, which was purchased for $250 and used as a private school.

Pecan Creek School, District #29, is located on 4.5 acres in north-central Gillespie County. In 1916, school patrons donated land, materials, and labor for the school. The original house was moved in sections and rebuilt as a one-room wooden schoolhouse. The building has pine floors, a beaded-board ceiling, windows along the south side, and an east entrance with an enclosed cloakroom.

In 1936, an open shed was attached to the school building. At that time, a stage and dance floor were added and later improved. Today, the school still has a permanent 15' x 20' stage with a walkway around the back wall. The original stage curtain remains in place and displays advertisements from early Gillespie County merchants.

Many original classroom features are still preserved. Blackboards cover portions of the west and north walls, and a wood-burning stove stands near the back east side. A bookcase remains on the east wall. Double desks purchased in 1935, a world globe purchased in 1936, and a dust-proof map case containing nine maps purchased in 1938 are still in the classroom.

Other historic features remain on the grounds. A girls’ outdoor toilet stands about 30 yards west of the school, while the boys’ outhouse is about 60 yards to the south. A rainwater cistern, added in 1934 on the north side of the school, once provided drinking water but is no longer in use.

In 1988, a reunion was held 105 years after schooling began in the Pecan Creek area. Six former teachers and 83 former students attended. Mrs. Albert Menske, formerly Hilda Crenwelge, was the oldest former student present at age 94.
