Overview
Built in 1936 and consolidated in 1949, Nebgen School is one of four historic Gillespie County schools with a pavilion and stage.
The school was known for its end-of-year “school closings,” a full-day community celebration. The morning began with the Schulprüfung, a public oral and written school examination. In the afternoon, families enjoyed games, and in the evening, adults performed a play followed by a dance. The men cooked barbecue and sold it by the pound, while families brought side dishes to share.

Full History of Nebgen School
Nebgen School District #33 was located near the Gillespie-Blanco County line. In 1881, the first school was built of logs on land donated by the Truman Taylor family. It was originally called Smith Valley School.
In 1901, a second school was built about 150 yards from the first building. It was named Lindemann School because the Lindemann family had the largest number of children enrolled. Several years later, the school became known as Nebgen School.
The Nebgen School was rebuilt in 1936. The one-room frame building had an embossed tin exterior, a tin roof, a stone chimney, one door, and many windows. Inside, the north wall was covered with blackboards. Water came from a cistern, and when electricity reached the community, lights replaced the earlier gas or kerosene lanterns.
Classes were held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students brought their lunches from home and helped with daily janitorial duties.
One of the most memorable traditions was the Schulprüfung, a public school examination held at the close of the school year. Children, parents, and friends gathered at the school in their finest clothes for an all-day event. A guest teacher traditionally conducted the examination, although custom required the teacher to decline the honor first.
An arbor was often built outside the school, with benches arranged for guests. Each class was examined in every subject. Most of the exam was oral, except arithmetic, which students worked on slates and displayed to the visitors. After the examination, students presented a program.
By evening, the schoolroom was converted into a ballroom, and dancing continued late into the night. The men cooked barbecue to sell by the pound, and families brought side dishes to complete the meal.
In 1935, a choir of 12 members was organized to add music and fellowship to the community. Nebgen School was consolidated with the Stonewall Independent School District in 1949.
A community club was organized in 1946 and named The Nebgen Bee Community Club. It remained active with about 40 members until 1990. In 2001, former students renewed the effort to preserve the school by forming the Nebgen Community Club and beginning restoration work on the property.
