Overview

Built in 1926, Cherry Mountain School served local students until it consolidated with Fredericksburg ISD in 1949. School discipline was strict, both at home and in the classroom. Although students were sometimes threatened with the “switch” or paddle, most discipline involved missing recess, standing in the corner, standing near the teacher’s desk, or facing the blackboard with their nose inside a chalk-drawn circle.

Full History of Cherry Mountain School

In the school’s early years, drinking water was carried from the William Thiele residence, located about 250 yards from the school. Later, a well was drilled on the school property. At first, students drank from a shared bucket using a single dipper. In later years, children brought their own collapsible cups and kept them in their desks.

The second Cherry Mountain School building was constructed in 1926 on approximately 1½ acres donated by Otto Thiele. Ed Roos completed the masonry work, Fritz Rummler served as carpenter, and Otto Kentron and Otto Schuch helped with construction.

J. F. Oehler was the first teacher in the new school. During its first year, enrollment reached 39 students; the following year, 36 attended. The school originally offered five grades, later adding sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. During the 1927–1928 school year, ninth grade was also taught. Night school for eighth and ninth-grade students was offered from 1931 to 1933, when Reinhold Weber was the teacher.

Cherry Mountain School consolidated with Fredericksburg ISD in 1949.
