The Friends of Gillespie County Country Schools

🏫 2026 Country School Open Houses & Public Visits

All open houses and events listed on our calendar are open to the public, and we warmly invite you to experience the rich German heritage of the historic one-room country schools in and around Fredericksburg.

Join us during scheduled open houses to step inside these treasured schoolhouses, learn about early Hill Country education, and connect with the stories of the families and communities who built them. While you’re here, we encourage you to make a weekend of your visit—stay at one of the many local bed and breakfasts and explore additional historic sites, shops, and attractions featured on our Trip Planner page.

Even when no official open house is scheduled, the school grounds remain a delight to explore. Many properties offer peaceful settings ideal for leisurely walks, birdwatching, geocaching, photography, and quiet reflection. If a schoolhouse happens to be locked, you’re still welcome to look through the windows for a glimpse of the interior. Should a private event be taking place, we kindly ask that you respect the occasion and avoid disrupting those activities.
